How does STSDev compare to Visual Studio Extensions for Windows Sharepoint Services?  Is STSDev supported by Microsoft in the same way VSeWSS is (or isn't)?  What will happen in future versions of SharePoint?  I think that they are trying to incorporate VSeWSS into Visual Studio 2010.  What if they change the 12-hive structure in the next version of SharePoint?

STSDev is an open-source project which is not supported by Microsoft.  Visual Studio Extensions for SharePoint is a Microsoft product which has some sort of support structure in place.  As an add-in for Visual Studio, VSE makes it easy for developers to build SharePoint solutions, yet doesn't expose all the functionality that some developers want to see.  STSDev, while a bit more advanced (which may mean more complicated for some) and gives you more access to the underlying SharePoint infrastructure.  It's somewhat of a trade-off between ease-of-use and control.
