Specifying Target

May 12, 2008 at 6:29 PM
I am new to STSDEV and SharePoint, so sorry of this is a stupid question.  When I use STSDEV in Visual Studio, how/where do I specify the target (server and path) for the deployment (via DebugDeploy)?  Is it by changing the TargetUrl in Microsoft.SharePoint.targets? Or do I need to change something else?  Thanks!!

You don't have to specify a target (server and path). Since you are developing on the server itself, you have just one SharePoint installation and the solution is deployed on a global scale for all the webapplications defined in SharePoint (stsadm has the argument "allcontenturls"). After deployment you will find your solution in Central Administration -> Operations -> Solution Management, and you can enable/disable features for any site collection in any web application.

If you need to deploy your solution on a different server however, you take your solution to that server and deploy it with the aid of stsadm, or use the SharePoint installer (also available on codeplex).

Hope it helps,
